Mill 19.

A soaring research and development hub that is remaking the manufacturing sector

Mill 19 was built circa 1943 by Jones & Laughlin to house munitions production during World War II. Following the war, it became a rolling mill, producing 10” bar steel. In the 1970s, LTV Steel took control of the building and used it to store coke oven brick. Mill 19 is approximately 100 feet wide and 1,200 feet long.

Today, within the building’s original steel skeleton, Mill 19 is ushering in a new era of manufacturing, research and development, with a focus on A.I., automation, robotics and other innovations. The structure is being completed in three phases and the first tenants — Advanced Robotics for Manufacturing (ARM), Carnegie Mellon University’s Manufacturing Futures Institute (MFI), and Catalyst Connections — have moved into the first building (Phase A). The second building (Phase B) is also complete, and in 2020 autonomous technology company Aptiv moved in.

Mill 19 is owned and under development by the Regional Industrial Development Corporation (RIDC).

MANUFACTURING FUTURES INSTITUTE

The Richard King Mellon Foundation announced a $30 million commitment in 2021 to enable Carnegie Mellon to expand its work through the Manufacturing Futures Institute (MFI) at Hazelwood Green. As an institute, MFI will be a permanent organization with the long-term vision to address the complex challenges facing U.S. and global manufacturing and to enhance economic development.

Among the Manufacturing Futures Institute's goals will be to develop state-of-the-art advanced materials and manufacturing equipment and processes, such as additive manufacturing; build collaborations between CMU researchers, industry and government organizations; fuel entrepreneurship through startups and spinoff companies; strengthen the ecosystem for technology transfer to industry partners; and expand high-tech workforce training for the Pittsburgh region's residents.

MFI researchers will create synergies by collaborating with the nearby Robotics Innovation Center to accelerate their work .
