RFQ: Opportunity for Artists at Hazelwood Green Plaza
Pittsburgh, PA…November 2, 2018 … Office of Public Art (OPA) and Monmade (MM) are excited to announce the launch of a new opportunity for artists, craftspeople, and fabricators (Artists) to create site furnishings for the Plaza at Hazelwood Green. OPA and MM have released a Request for Qualifications to identify a pre-qualified pool of regional Artists to develop custom designed elements, which may include benches, paving, waste receptacles, bollards, bike racks, tree grates, and lighting. The furnishings will be incorporated into the Plaza and other locations throughout the development. Artists will receive design fees of $5,000 - $8,000 based on scope of work. Anyone on the Pittsburgh Artist Registry or engaged with Monmade is eligible to apply. All applications must be submitted via Submittable; hard copy and emailed applications will not be accepted. Artists must also update their Pittsburgh Artist Registry profile or Monmade Producer profile by the application deadline: Thursday, November 29, 2018 at 11:59 pm. An information session about this opportunity will be part of the upcoming Monmade Mixer on Thursday, November 15, 2018 from 6:30 - 8:30 PM at PG&H, located at 536 Smithfield Street, Pittsburgh 15222. The Plaza is a two-acre site being designed by landscape architects Gustafson Guthrie Nicholl (GGN) of Seattle, Washington to host a wide range of programming year-round, such as community events, small-scale concerts, and temporary installations. It is adjacent to Carnegie Mellon University’s Manufacturing Futures Initiative and the Advanced Robotics Manufacturing (ARM) Institute, early tenants of the Mill 19 building. Selected Artists will work in collaboration with OPA, MM, GGN, and Almono LLC (the general partner of Almono LP, the primarily landowners of the Hazelwood Green site) to develop design concepts in January and February of 2019, with fabrication and installation complete by August 2019.

“Monmade and Office of Public Art are excited by the potential of connecting our partners to Hazelwood Green,” continues Katie Schaible, Design and Development Specialist at Monmade. “Working together, our team will provide the support needed for producers and artists who may not have yet made the leap in scale to outdoor site furnishings, connecting them with fabrication resources and assisting with project management. Producers and artists who are selected for this opportunity may have the option to design, fabricate, and install the work, or may provide designs that are implemented by another fabricator with the producer’s or artist’s supervision. This is a great entry point for our region’s creatives to work in the public realm.”
