Almono LP announces new riverfront planning effort for Hazelwood Green

The foundation ownership of Hazelwood Green is pushing forward to determine the future use of a last key undecided piece of the 178-acre brownfield redevelopment: its 1.3-mile stretch of riverfront.

Almono LP, led by the Heinz Endowments and the Richard King Mellon Foundation, announced that it has engaged with the Pennsylvania Environmental Council and downtown-based architecture firm Environmental Planning & Design to launch a master planning process to determine the future uses of the riverfront at Hazelwood Green.

The process is being supported by a grant from the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources along with matching funds from Almono LP, with EPD on board to oversee the design and public engagement process.

The new riverfront master planning effort is expected to complement the larger development plan for the rest of the site, a much denser revision of a previous plan that was approved by the Pittsburgh Planning Commission in September 2018 and calls for a total build out of 4.35 million square feet of commercial development and as many as 3,500 homes.

Almono's goals is to pursue recreational uses for the riverfront stretch, as well as guide the reuse of the remaining industrial structures along the river's edge. That includes a pump house, various mooring cells, platforms as well as coal loaders and catwalks. An overarching goal is also to restore the environment of the site's riverfront.
