'A new icon': University of Pittsburgh gets green light for Pitt Bioforge project

The University of Pittsburgh has received the green light to build Pitt Bioforge, a planned $250 million biomanufacturing facility at Hazelwood Green.

The city’s Planning Commission approved the project at its regular meeting Tuesday. The facility will produce cell and gene therapies for diseases that currently do not have any interventions, Pitt officials said, and could revitalize the region’s interest in the life sciences while being an economic driver to the community.

Anchor tenant ElevateBio — a Massachusetts-based company focused on developing transformative cell and gene therapies — said the 185,000-square-foot facility will be officially known as the Bioforge biomanufacturing center.

“The site will be used for cell and gene therapy innovation,” said Chuck Alcorn, planner for the University of Pittsburgh.
