Community Chronicles: In Pittsburgh's Hazelwood Neighborhood, Redevelopment Means Rebuilding Together

The Heinz Endowments’ magazine, h, wraps up its “In the Neighborhood” series with an exploration of Hazelwood. As the former home of a coke-producing plant for the steel industry that once fueled the Pittsburgh region’s economy, Hazelwood teemed with bustling streets and thriving businesses until the mill closed and the economy eroded. But similar to Homewood and the Hill District — the two other neighborhoods in our series — residents and community leaders, artists and entrepreneurs, developers and nonprofits are trying to ensure that Hazelwood is revitalized in ways that are fair and beneficial to all.
